Eating with your medication can significantly impair or delay the absorption of your medication.
Food decreases the rate of gastric emptying (which decreases the speed of transit from your stomach to your small intestine).
Since most medications are absorbed through the small intestine this can reduce the speed of absorption.
f you’re expecting your medication to “kick-in” quickly the recommendation is to take it without food. Sometimes food can bind to your medication impairing the absorption up to 40%!
Many doses of medication (high blood pressure for example) are adjusted to their effect (the dose is increased or decreased until the desired effect is reached). Because of this it doesn’t necessarily matter that you take your medication with or without food, it matters that you consistently take it.
